Blog Entry 7 Reflection and Evaluation

For my English 099 class, I have done six blog entries, some class activities and one practice catw test. Everything is new for me in this class because all my homework is done on computer, which I have never done in other classes before. Now,  my college requires students to create e-portfolios, blogs and Facebook's to do their assignments. This class has helped me a lot to improve both my English skills and computer skills since I am not good at using computers. In my writing, the most challenging part is coming up with good ideas and finishing my articles in a certain amount of time. There are also some errors in my grammar and spelling. How to organize and make good connections from paragraph to paragraph is also a hard part for me. In the class, I have learned how to analyze the article by using annotations and written summaries using our own words. Today, I am learning the thesis-based writing and I feel that it is useful in my writing. "The Allegory or the Cave" is not easy for me and I need to read it a couple of times to understand it.
I took a practice CATW test this Tuesday and I don't think my writing was too good, because I believe my idea is too general. My test was about "Internet dating: New format, Same result." I wrote about how internet dating is not the normal  social way to meet with people. People used to hide the truth and post their perfect image on the web. I doubt that people will really care about others since they are strangers to them. When they think they are talking to the people, they are actually talking to the machine. Machines have no feelings. When the real meeting comes, and you find out the truth and it might not match what you expected, you will feel disappointed. There are some bad things such as some murder that has happened before through internet dating. Therefore, in my opinion, I think we need to be careful when we date someone through the internet.
I know I still need more practice to past the test.

  1. Hi Cui:

Below you will find my response for this blog series. This is not a grade, nor is it intended to be read as an evaluation of your performance in this class so far. The evaluation of the blog series may be found in Blackboard in the gradebook for this class and the grade is derived from a totally dofferent method as described in the syllabus. What you will see below is a response to your overall writing as of this blog series. The categories are from the CAT-W evaluation rubric (what the evaluator’s use). The comments below are intended to be both descriptive (what I see) and prescriptive (what you need to work on). I will be speaking with you personally about your current strengths and weakness during class. Please feel free to ask as many questions as you like about the following in class, during office hours, or in our FB groups.

Critical Response to Writing Task and Text: You addressing the topic and responding to the texts. Good!

Development of Writer’s Ideas: We may need a bit more work in this are as you develop more reasons for your beliefs and support them with evidence.

Structure of the Response: You have the basic essay structure, but we will work more on this.

Sentences, Word Choice, Grammar, Usage, Mechanics: Some minor ESL errors. You might want to consider copying text from The New York times as a method of practice.

Overall, a good start to the semester. We will be working on argument and development more.
